STRABAG alongside their European based subsidiary ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering have secured a contract to deliver specialised ground freezing expertise for the first time in Australia. Through their participation in Victoria’s largest transport infrastructure project, the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) in Melbourne, the companies are further expanding the Group's presence in this strategically important market.

The Suburban Rail Loop will transform Victoria’s public transport network by building a 90km orbital rail line The new system will connect every major train service in Melbourne, better connecting Victorians to employment, hospitals, universities and each other. STRABAG Group is now involved in construction of the new line’s first section, SRL East, which will be fully underground, connecting Cheltenham and Box Hill with 26km twin tunnels. SRL East has been under construction since 2022 and is expected to enter service in 2035.

Specialist ground freezing technique

Drawing on its many years of experience in ground freezing, ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering is contributing extensive expertise and specialist equipment for the construction of nearly 30 cross passages using the ground freezing methodology. The contract was awarded by Suburban Connect, a leading global consortium comprising CPB, Ghella and Acciona, to the Group’s subsidiary STRABAG Australia.
STRABAG Australia will be supported by its subsidiary company, Georgiou Group, which has extensive local expertise in infrastructure construction, as it carries out these important works for SRL East.

Local expertise meets international strength

STRABAG is one of Europe's leading technology partners for construction services, with around 89,000 employees delivering projects across more than 30 countries. That scale is built on deep specialist capability — including ground engineering, tunnelling, complex civil infrastructure — developed over more than a century and transferable wherever the Group operates. Australia represents a natural extension of that footprint: a market with a substantial infrastructure pipeline and appetite for proven technical solutions.

The Group pairs international engineering expertise with established local delivery capability, giving Australian clients access to methods and specialist resources drawn from a global portfolio while retaining the on-the-ground knowledge that infrastructure delivery here demands.
